DOG TRAINING: TOP 10 TIPS
1. Reward only what you want. Affection is a reward. Attention is a reward. Make sure you don't pair it with bad behaviors. 2. Assume bad behavior to avoid it. Dogs will naturally chew, bark, and urinate, all at the wrong time or place. Step in to manage bad behavior right away when you see it develop.
3. Walk your dog. Dogs are meant to move about, so don't make them stay cooped up. A tired dog is usually a good dog.
4. Correct AND reward. Verbal correction should be offset with treats for correct behavior. Balance discipline with rewards to avoid fearful dogs.
5. Be persistent. Training your dog well takes time. Stay committed, and keep training.
6. Dogs don't read minds. The read behaviors, body language. Make sure yours sends the right message.
7. Play! Because dogs are pack animals, give them opportunities to interact with other dogs in acceptable situations; alternatively, engage in "dog games" such a fetch and tug-of-war.
8. Train comfortably. Dog trainers have many ideas and systems. Pick one that feels comfortable to you, and stick with it. If you are too uncomfortable, your dog will be, too.
9. Make your dog work. They are happiest when striving and sharpening their innate predatory and hunting skills. Performing small tricks for food rewards, or hiding food in new places, is a good starting point.
